Concord Public School

Concord Public School Achievments

The Concord Public Schools have successfully undertaken an amazingly long list of programs designed to save on energy consumption and benefit the environment.  Some of the largest achievements have been:

  ·      Building three elementary schools to energy code specifications.

  ·      Updating lighting with CFL bulbs.

·      Installing low flow faucets and automatic flushing valves in school bathrooms.

·      Getting special state recognition for energy savings at Willard School.

·      Installing new high efficiency exterior glass windows in the Middle Schools.

Along with the foregoing, there have been strong initiatives in the area of recycling. The school system encourages saving electricity by turning off lights. Locally grown food is purchased for school lunches; students are encouraged to walk or ride bikes to school; and there is a policy against idling of school buses. Future energy saving projects will include boiler replacements at the Middle Schools and installation of solar roof panels at Willard.

Students at CCHS are getting classroom instruction about how they and their families can lower their carbon footprints. They are learning how to do a home energy analysis using a carbon calculator and to assess the adequacy of their home’s insulation using infrared thermometers. Both the students and their families have an opportunity to learn how to save money while saving on energy consumption and reducing carbon footprints.

The new CCHS Environmental Club, “ the Green Revolution,” sponsored a “Life in the Balance” film series, showing current award-winning environmental films.

In the CCSH Student Handbook there is a green statement that encourages students to engage in environmentally positive behavior when shopping for school and to eat an environmentally responsible diet.
