The Concord Fire Department reminds all Concord residents Open Burning Season began Jan. 15 and ends on May 1. In accordance with Fire Safety and Air Quality Regulations, open burning is allowed from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, provided conditions are safe.
Open burning is designed to allow property owners to burn debris on their property from storms, domestic garden preparation, domestic tree trimming and pruning, and general yard clean up. All debris must be from the property where the burning is taking place. Tree branches and cut brush can be burned, but leaves, grass and hay cannot be burned. All burning must take place a minimum of 75 feet from any dwelling or street and it is prohibited to use petroleum products or accelerants of any form to start or maintain a fire.
Before burning, the area should be cleared of other materials and efforts made to ensure the permit fire does not extend. Water, a shovel and rake should be kept at the ready to extinguish the fire if the winds increase or when notified by the fire department.
Burning permits are now available from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily at Fire Headquarters, 209 Walden St., or Station 2, 1201 Main St. A decision is made daily to allow burning, and residents can verify burning is allowed prior to starting a fire by tuning to Concord Community Television, Channel 8 and 9 in Concord. If burning is allowed, call the Fire Department at 978-318-3454 to report your permit number before starting the fire.
