What is a Carbon Footprint?

A carbon footprint is the amount of greenhouse gas emissions an individual produces in his or her daily life.

Why do I need to calculate my footprint? Is it really important?

Yes it is! Greenhouse gases are causing climate change and everyone can take steps to reduce their emissions.

What is the Community Carbon Calculator?

The Community Carbon Calculator is a partial calculator to measure the amount of carbon a household is using; compare their household use to other anonymous, representative households in Concord and Carlisle; and compare their household use to the use of other households around the world.

How do I use the Carbon Calculator?

Find your utility bills for this last year and use for the “Calculate” section to record out how much energy you have been using; figure out how many miles you have driven this year ion your cars and record in the calculator; figure out how many long and short airplane trips you have taken and record in the calculator; then press the 'Preview' button. You will then be shown your personal output of carbon in kilograms for the year. How did you do? Could you take steps to reduce your footprint? See below.

How do I reduce my carbon footprint?

Go to the 'Reduce' tab, view the selections and make some decisions to reduce your footprint such as by planting a tree, installing solar panels on your home or even deciding to eat vegetarian. You can greatly reduce not only your own carbon footprint, but also your household. Talk to your neighbors about the Calculator and spread the word on how to use it and how to make a difference. Once you've decided on your reductions, press the "Go" button under the reduction you have decide to take. Congratulations on reducing your footprint!
