Appliance store recycling practices

Name:
Judy Hill

We plan to buy a new energy-saving refrigerator.  What do the various appliance stores, who take your old refrigerator away, do with those old refrigerators?  We want ours not to go into a landfill but be responsibly disposed of.  Can you recommend a certain retailer?

I spoke with New England

I spoke with New England Appliance in Maynard, 978-897-5579, and they responded that they bring their old refrigerators to a scrap yard where the yard buys the all metal that the refrigerator is made from and recycle these metals.

Sears in Natick, 508-650-2800, said they take off the harmful debris and parts and melt the metal and reuse.

Home Depot in Leominster, 978-840-0800, said they haul it to a scrap yard where all the metals get recycled.

Another thing you might consider before buying is to see if your appliance if applicable to receiving an energy efficient appliance rebate. See here for more info.
